Is There Any Interaction Between Metformin and Alcohol?

The blood sugar or glucose levels in people with diabetes can be managed through the intake of oral diabetes medications such as metformin. Individuals who are diagnosed with non-insulin dependent or type 2 diabetes are prescribed to have a regular dose of metformin, by their physician. However, the medication can’t be used as a treatment for type1 or insulin dependent diabetes.

The patients who are at risk of developing this life threatening lactic acidosis are those that have pre-existing conditions or were diagnosed previously with kidney or liver diseases, severe infection, congestive heart failure, due to this risk, its important to avoid  intake of alcohol and metformin at the same time. Patients who are also dehydrated or those who are drinking larger amounts of alcoholic beverages are also at risk for this condition. A consultation with your doctor is important if you are at risk of lactic acidosis.

It is also very important that you avoid using metformin and drinking alcohol. Alcohol can lower the blood sugar levels and it can increase your risk of developing lactic acidosis while taking such medication. Metformin and alcohol use can cause possible harmful effects.

Avoid taking this medication in larger or smaller than the prescribed amount or longer than what is recommended.  Always read and observe the directions giving on the medication label. Metformin Drug Interactions:

During  Biguanide therapy when the patients (who were already taking Metoformin) were administered with intravascular iodinated radiocontrast media , the drug seemed to precipitate lactic acidosis. This can be considered a rare yet fatal complication. This may be due to the drug interactions. Iodinated contrast material can bring about conditions like acute renal failure, which is an important risk factor for biguanide-induced lactic acidosis. A remedy for these types of drug interactions: Biguanide therapy should be stopped for a temporary time period and not resumed before 48 hours after the procedure and after making sure that renal function has returned to normal.

Between Pseudoephedrine(12 hour cold)  and Metformin

The efficacy of insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents may be diminished by certain drugs, including corticosteroids, thiazides, thyroid hormones, human growth hormone, estrogens, progestins, gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists, phenothiazines, atypical antipsychotics, sympathomimetic amines, protease inhibitors, phenytoin, megestrol, danazol, isoniazid, asparaginas,  adrenocorticotropic agents,  pegaspargase, diazoxide, temsirolimus, sucralfate oral suspension, as well as pharmacologic dosages of nicotinic acid. There are chances that these drugs may interfere with blood glucose control and thereby cause new-onset diabetes mellitus, hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance, and/or exacerbation of preexisting diabetes. Also monitoring is necessary to make sure that when these drugs are withdrawn the patients do not get infected with hypoglycemia, and another measure to decrease the effect of these drug interactions is the dosage adjustment of the hypoglycemic agent.

Between Metformin and Acarbose

This is another of Drug Interations. Decreased Bioavailability and delayed onset of actions are the major occurrences when Metformin is taken along with Acarbose. An additional observance was that there was a 35 % decrease in the peak serum concentration and AUC. This may be mainly due to Metformin consuming longer time for intestinal absorption. Close clinical monitoring is necessary to keep a watch on the decreased matformin response. There have been no suggestions for an alternate therapy.

Between Desonide and Metformin

Generally, people claim that there are no side effects. Therefore, the drug has proved to be quite safe. However, there are  negative effects that can cause concern for some patients.

Some other negative effects may also include dark urination, pain while urination and severe, unexplained pain in bones.
