Today eternal youth is up for grabs, thanks to injectable wrinkle fillers – treatments that immediately plump, pouf, and fill your lines and wrinkles in under 10 minutes for as little as $700 – with results lasting up to 2 years or longer.

Here’s a look at what’s available – and the treatments compare:

Juvederm
Ingredient; A smooth Hyaluronic Acid gel made from a bacterial protein
Effects: 6 months or longer
FDA Approved for: Moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds
FYI: Not recommended for use in patients with severe allergies, particularly to bacterial proteins.

Restylane
Ingredient: Hyaluronic acid particles suspended in a gel.
Results: 6 months to 1 year or longer
FDA Approved for: Moderate to severe wrinkles around nose and mouth.
FYI: Allergic reactions are rare. .

Captique
Ingredient: Hyaluronic Acid particles suspended in gel
Effects: Up to 1 year
FDA approved for: Moderate to severe wrinkles and folds around nose and mouth
FYI: Is often used to add volume to cheeks.

Hylaform, Hylaform Plus
Ingredient: Hyaluronic acid particles derived from rooster combs
Effects: 4- 6 months.
FDA approved for: Moderate to severe wrinkles around nose to mouth. Hylaform Plus
used for filling deeper wrinkles.
FYI: Possible allergic reaction for those sensitive birds or bird byproducts

Perlane
Ingredient: Biotechnologically engineered, stabilized hyaluronic acid gel particles,
Effects: 6 months to 1 year
FDA approved for: Moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles. A cousin to “Restylane”
the particles in Perlane are larger and go deeper into the dermis allowing for the
correction of deeper folds, lines and wrinkles.
FYI: This filler is meant to be injected deeper into the skin and should not be
used for surface lines.

Elevess
Ingredient: Hyaluronic acid (in the highest cross linked concentration allowed by law),
in combination with the anesthetic lidocaine.
Effects: One year or longer expected due to a new process of cross-linking of
hyaluronic acid.
FDA Approved for: Wrinkles and scars; is expected to be also used for lip
augmentation.
FYI: Should not be used by anyone with sensitivity to lidocaine.

Radiesse (Bioform)
Ingredient: Micro spheres of the mineral calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in gel
Effects: Up to 2 years; research shows that the body begins producing collagen
around the micro spheres, which can lead to longer lasting effects over time.
FDA approved for: Long lasting fill of deep lines including nasal-labial folds;
FYI: Clumping of the filler can develop when injected into the lips so not
recommended for use in this area. . Small risk of allergic reaction.

ArteFill
Ingredient: 80% purified bovine collagen with .3% lidocaine; 20% micro sphere
particles made from polymethylmethacrylate, a plexi-glass type material not
absorbed by the body.
Effects: Permanent, but full results take up to three months. Initially the collagen
fills the lines; the body reacts to the spheres by creating natural collagen that
ultimately offers permanent fill.
FDA approved for: Deep and severe wrinkles and folds around nose and mouth
it is considered to be a permanent implant rather than strictly a wrinkle filler.
FYI: Not to be used for lip augmentation; should not be used by those with a
sensitivity to lidocaine, or bovine allergies; not to be used if you have a history
of keloid (scar tissue)formation.

Sculptra
Main Ingredient: Synthetic polylactic acid in micro spheres
Effects: Lasting up to two years
FDA approved for: Volumizing of HIV patients suffering from loss of facial structure. In use outside the US as the facial filler “New Fill”. Off label use in the US for facial rejuvenation.
FYI: The ingredients in this filler are made for deep injections below the muscles and not as an injectable into fine lines. At least one study published in the journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that using this filler incorrectly could lead to permanent disfigurement
